Pfizer announces 6000 job losses

The announcement follows Pfizer's acquisition of its rival company Wyeth in 2009. The cuts would take effect over the coming 18 months, with about 6,000 jobs expected to go worldwide.Eight plants in Ireland, Puerto Rico, and the United States are expected to close by the end of 2015, as well as about 90 jobs from the pharmaceutical plant in Hampshire, although the company said the vaccine packaging and distribution plant in Havant, which employs about 400 people, would remain open....................& more


A step closer to "Aids Vaccine"

Research findings published in Nature, may help international efforts to design an effective Aids vaccine. It seems some people have a natural protection against HIV, but the research team at MIT and Harvard says any such vaccine is at least a decade away.The findings relate to so-called "elite controllers" - a small number of people who, when exposed to HIV, progress very slowly to Aids or never deal all. Sanofi prostate cancer drug shows 28 percent survival

Sanofi-Aventis' cabazitaxel candidate prostate cancer drug combined with prednisone reduced the risk of death by 28 percent compared with another treatment, the outcome of a final-stage trial showed.The French drugmaker said on Thursday that the combination of the treatments led to an improved median overall survival of 15.1 months against 12.7 months in patients who took a chemotherapy of mitoxantrone with prednisone/prednisolone.The primary endpoint of the so-called Tropic trial was overall survival......................& more

Jazz Pharmaceuticals Submits New Drug Application For JZP-6 (sodium Oxybate) For The Treatment Of Fibromyalgia

Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: JAZZ) announced it has submitted a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for JZP-6 (sodium oxybate oral solution) for the treatment of fibromyalgia.

The submission is based on a comprehensive clinical development program for JZP-6, including results from two Phase III clinical trials. In both trials, sodium oxybate significantly decreased pain and fatigue as well as improved daily function, patient global impression of change, and sleep quality. Vertex Hepatitis C Drug Shows 75 Percent Cure Rate

Hepatitis C is one of the hottest areas for drug development and Vertex Pharmaceuticals has released a study that gives new hope to patients and investors. The results show its Telaprevir treatment increased the cure rate to 75 percent in a pivotal tiral of previously untreated patients, while also reducing the time needed for treatment. By contrast, the cure rate for patients who received only existing therapies was just 44 percent. Of those who got 12 weeks of telaprevir, 75 percent had a sustained viral response, meaning the virus was not detectable in their blood 24 weeks after completing treatment. Dr. Reddys Lab launches hypertension drug in U.S.

Pharma major Dr. Reddys Laboratories on Monday said it has begun the sale of Amlodipine Benazepril capsules, used for the treatment of hypertension, in the U.SThe company launched the Amlodipine Benazepril capsules, which are a bio-equivalent generic version of Lotrel capsules, in the U.S. market on April 23, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

The United States Food & Drug Administration granted approval for capsules on April 15, it said.“In September 2009, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories had entered into a patent settlement with Novartis on Amlodipine Benazepril, stipulating the dismissal of the lawsuits in the U.S,” it added.
